it’s the 1920’s and the manufacture and sale of alcohol has been prohibited by the american government under the temperance movement. but rather than comply with these new prohibition restrictions, the citizens have simply moved underground. bootlegging has become the newest hobby, and speakeasies have started popping up on every block. sensing an opportunity, one boy has assembled a small gang to compete on the streets. they call themselves the dregs, and have just opened an underground speakeasy, the crow club. the notoriety of this small gang has roared to life seemingly overnight, much to the displeasure of the larger gangs on the streets. rumor has it that they deal in everything and anything—no job is too dirty or too illegal for them, and they don’t take no for an answer.

if you want it? head to the crow club. if you can impress their leader, kaz brekker, then no request is off the table, as long as you have the funds. but be warned, brekker and his gang don’t come cheap.

he thumbed quickly through the ledger and said, “when people see a cripple walking down the street, leaning on his cane, what do they feel?” wylan looked away. people always did when kaz talked about his limp, as if he didn’t know what he was or how the world saw him. “they feel pity. now, what do they think when they see me coming?”
wylan’s mouth quirked up at the corner. “they think they’d better cross the street.”

jordie fished kaz out of the water and gave him his dry coat.
“i’m hungry,” kaz said.
“i’m not,” jordie replied. and for some reason that had struck kaz as funny, and they’d both started laughing. jordie wrapped his arms around kaz and said, “the city is winning so far. but you’ll see who wins in the end.”
the next morning, jordie woke with a fever.

jesper ran a finger up wylan’s forearm, and wylan flushed a vibrant pink. matthias couldn’t help but sympathize with the boy. he knew what it was to be out of your depth, and he sometimes suspected they could forgo all of kaz’s planning and simply let jesper and nina flirt the entirety of ketterdam into submission.
